Execute Query is an operating system independent database utility.

Execute Query Version 3.0.1 Build 5057

Summary of changes from 3.0 Build 5052:

Build 5057 addresses a number of issues identified with the first 3.0final downloads. Thanks to all who posted bug reports and suggestions.

  • JDBC Driver entry form panel - added save and name change in drivers tree on name field focus lost.
  • Query Editor - Fixed the parser for multiple query execution where a semi-colon at the end of a query after a string char close quote resulted in execution errors (bad tokenisation on parsing).
  • ERD - Modified foreground colour (tables) to allow for selected table colour changes and just apply to all tables unless no selections are made.
  • Connection definiton panel - added save and name change in the tree on name field focus lost in addition to existing methods.
  • Saved drivers and connections tree popup menus - Added new driver and new connection menu items to respective popup menus.
  • Fixed issue when using the Find button on the driver panel which caused a NoClassDefFoundError with certain JDBC drivers (reported on Oracle 10g and selected MySQL driver versions).
  • Modified Java VM check to account for non-Sun Java releases eg. IBM.
  • Fixed bug in cancelling execution of stored procedure/function on Query Editor.
  • Added System.out to output pane logging.
  • Added System.out/err output user options for local output pane PLUS JVM default console output mechanism.
  • Modified default Query Editor output option to verbose.
  • Fixed problem with connection and driver name change within tree labels following name field focus lost.
  • Added paste stack trace button to exception error dialog box.
  • Added null check and exception thrown on connection retrieved from the data source object.
  • Added proxy configuration support for check update and user feedback function to work through a proxy server.
  • Added max rows field to query editor result set output.
  • Added clear button to reset/clear the editor's executed SQL history.
  • Added open in new Query Editor for executed SQL history selection.
  • Added direct feedback (comments, requests, bug) dialog to the help menu.
  • Added check on transaction level support that prevented a connection being established for certain drivers (ie. ODBC to Excel spreadsheet)
  • Fixed catalog/schema references returning empty table name values within the browser tree where catalog/schema references were not supported.

Execute Query has been significantly redesigned for version 3.0 and includes a number of new features in addition to extensions and enhancements of all previous components and functions.

Central to the redesign has been the underlying layout of the application. The MDI interface has been replaced by an easier to use and more responsive tabbed panel interface. This has allowed some components that were previously almost stand-alone internal frames to be more central and controlling features such as the database schema browser which now functions as a primary and controlling component.

New feature highlights summary:

  • Tabbed interface with draggable docked side panels.
  • Multiple database connections.
  • Redesigned query editor allowing more intuitive query execution
  • as well as allowing multiple result sets in a new tabbed environment.
  • Wizard style functionality for the more complex tasks.
  • Import/export enhancements including binary object support.
  • Redesigned tools and tool configuration.
  • Draggable/clickable SQL keyword list
  • Improved JDBC driver detection
  • Stored object execution
  • Improved logging and file output
  • Improved table printing
  • Data type comparison across different databases
  • Enhanced SQL script generation
  • ... and many more
  • Further usability features have been added including more customisation features and keyboard shortcuts to often used editor commands including query execution and the commit and rollback of statements.

The documentation has also been completely rebuilt.

Thanks to those who submitted bugs and suggestions. Keep them coming!

    Deployment Environment

At present the recommended Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE) version is at least 1.5.0.

This program has been tested under JRE version 1.5.0 on the following platforms:

    • Windows versions 2000 and XP
    • Solaris8, Solaris9 and Solaris10
    • Various flavours of Linux

    Startup files

The application may be started by using the executable file eq.exe (Windows only) or the Unix shell scripts eq.sh.

Alternatively you may simply execute the Java archive eq.jar from the installation directory using your installed Java 1.5 runtime environment.

    Source Code

Source code is available for download directly from the download link at executequery.org (where this program was downloaded). The source file is typically named executequery-src-[version].tar.gz.

If you are interested in a particular feature but can not locate it within the code, please contact myself at the above address and you will be pointed in the right direction.

Note: In line with the significant redesign of much of Execute Query, the opportunity was taken to refactor much of the source code. Packages have been reorganised and many classes renamed or merged with like objects.
